Banig Weaving is one of the major means of livelihood of the townsfolk. Most weavers depend only on one livelihood or means of survival and these antiqueña rely almost exclusively on product orders to survive.
Traditional weaving practices in the province of Antique, particularly in the town of Libertad, are facing a serious threat from commercialization and modernization.
There is a prevailing preference for conventional, unsustainable products especially in the bulk and corporate gifting industry. This trend perpetuates harmful consumption patterns and poses a barrier to achieving positive social and environmental impacts
Younger generations are hesitant to learn traditional weaving methods due to observing their ancestors' struggles and the perception of the work as labor intensive, compounded by the absence of government programs to preserve these skills, thus making BANIG WEAVING AS SLOWLY-DYING TRADITION
Twelve Topaz began its journey in 2019 with a simple yet heartfelt goal: to create a meaningful Christmas experience for indigent children in the province of Antique. To raise funds for this initiative, the founder offered hand-woven Banig bags to her network. Through this initial effort, she not only provided assistance to those in need but also planted the seeds of the organization's purpose.
Since then, Twelve Topaz has evolved into a proud social enterprise , committed to strengthening the preservation of weaving traditions in Antique. Twelve Topaz is passionate about reviving love for culture and heritage while championing Antiqueña Weavers by transforming their livelihood into a social enterprise that generates income and creates opportunities for growth.
Twelve Topaz' work is especially significant in Libertad, the northernmost part of Antique, where banig weaving is a cherished tradition passed down through generations. Despite its rich history, this tradition faces challenges such as an aging workforce, lack of youth involvement, and tough market competition.
At Twelve Topaz, they recognize these challenges and are dedicated to addressing them. The social enterprise provides training, support, and market access to weavers, empowering them to sustain their craft and livelihoods. Their commitment to producing sustainable and ethically made Antique products drives the organization forward in their mission.
